Current position
Mr Konstantinos Charitopoulos (pronounced Haritopoulos), PhD, FEBU, is a Consultant Urological Surgeon and the Service Director for Urology at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Trust, where he leads one of London’s most active urology departments. Chelsea and Westminster NHS Trust have two main sites: the West Middlesex University Hospital and the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. Mr Charitopoulos coordinates and manages clinical activities across the two Hospitals. He has regular private clinics at the Circle Syon clinic in Brentford, New Victoria Hospital in Kingston upon Thames, the Mount Alvernia Hospital in Guildford and ad hoc clinics at the Cromwell Hospital in Kensington.
In his consultant role, Mr Charitopoulos provides expert care across the full spectrum of urological conditions, with particular expertise in minimally invasive surgery, prostate health, stone disease, and day surgery. His leadership combines clinical excellence with strategic service development, ensuring high quality, patient centred care across the organisation. Alongside his clinical and managerial responsibilities, he remains committed to research, teaching, and innovation, continually advancing standards in modern urological practice.
Mr Charitopoulos is a Senior Honorary Clinical Lecturer in Medicine at Imperial College of Medicine, London, where he contributes to undergraduate teaching, supervises clinical trainees, and participates in academic programmes that bridge clinical practice and research. This academic role complements his clinical work and supports ongoing collaboration between the hospital and university to improve education and patient care.
Background and Training
Mr Charitopoulos qualified in medicine at Patras University Medical School and completed his core urological training at the 1st Department of Urology of Athens University Medical School, Greece. He undertook higher urological training at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, where he completed a nationally recognised post‑CCT Fellowship in Endourology.
He holds a PhD with honours in academic research and the Fellowship of the European Board of Urology (FEBU). His training provided extensive experience in endourology and minimally invasive techniques, with particular clinical expertise in stone disease and in delivering day‑case surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). He is very actively involved in clinical research and postgraduate teaching, translating academic advances into improved patient care.
Research and Publications
Mr Charitopoulos, was awarded his PhD from the University of Athens, with his doctoral work recognised for several prize‑winning academic papers. He is the author of over 40 peer‑reviewed articles and several book chapters, including some that have been published by Oxford University Press and Springer. His research has been presented widely at national and international urology conferences. His scholarly outputs are focused on endourology, stone disease and minimally invasive techniques. These have been published in leading specialty journals such as European Urology, BJU International, and the Journal of Endourology, and is indexed on PubMed and consolidated on ORCID (0000‑0001‑9282‑4549). He leads and contributes to various NHS clinical research projects and supervises postgraduate trainees. Mr Charitopoulos contributes to multidisciplinary teams (MDT) translating evidence into improved clinical pathways and patient outcomes; he is Chair of the Chelsea and Westminster NHS Trust Stone MDT.
